Canggu, Bali – (ELEPHANT GUN) Dustin Humphrey has established himself as one of the surf-world’s most forward-thinking photographers. Originally from Huntington Beach, California, now based in Bali, Humphrey is constantly evolving his craft from drawing on his passions–surfing, motorcycles, music and art–to expanding his technique by using unconventional light sources, experimental equipment, unusual angles, and exotic, off-the-grid locations. This combination of creativity and a forward-thinking mindset has enabled Humphrey to become one of the most prolific lensman of the 21st Century as well as a highly successful entrepreneur. Elephant Gun photographer Fabrizio Alessi sat down with Humphrey for a quick Q&A.

What inspired you to become a surf photographer ?

I wasn’t really inspired to be a ‘surf’ photographer nor do I consider myself just a surf photographer. Surfing is a big part of my life and it organically became something I documented in my travels.

Looking back at all your trips what are your favorite/worst memories?

So many favorites its really hard to narrow it down to one. Shooting the streets of Cuba in 04 would rank among my fondest memories! Maybe the worst stuck in Sumbawa with Malaria. But even the bad memories are good!

What is in your bag ?

Cannon, Hasselblad, Leica...the location and vibe determine what I use.

Favorite location(s) to shoot?

Again, its hard to narrow it down. Besides Cuba, Tanzania would rank at the top!

Whats the most important thing about photography you ‘ve learned so far?

I think it important to find a style of shooting that you like and get really good at it!

The Insight Campaign was revolutionary surf photography…can you tell me about the project, how you came up with the idea, why you chose b/w, and any anecdotes from the shoot you can share…on the project implementation?

The idea of the shoot came from Art Director Steve Garrow. I simply took the idea and and ran with it. I had some special equipment made special for the shoot and intrepid Steve's vision into own!
